Thank you for visiting The Spy and The Silencer.  Perhaps you've stumbled upon us from a links page or possibly from a specific web search for information about Trowa Barton or Midii Une from the Japanese anime series Gundam Wing.  Or better yet you are a new fan of the couple who has finally found their shrine ^_~  Here you can find 3xMU fanfiction by more than 50 different authors.  There is also a huge fanart gallery and official images of both Trowa and Midii, wallpapers and fan doujinshi.  You can read Episode Zero here as well and judge Trowa and Midii's official story for yourself. This page will direct you around the site for the information you need, but first a few clarifications may be necessary.  Series and manga SPOILERS can be found throughout the site!!

Who is Midii Une?

Midii Une is an official Gundam Wing character who appears only in Trowa's Episode Zero issue.  Episode Zero is an official Gundam Wing manga published in Japan in 1996 and the United States in 2001 which contains stories about important events in the pasts of the Gundam pilots.  It is written by Katsuyuki Sumisawa, a screenwriter for the series and was originally intended to be a televised episode that was cut due to production problems.

Trowa's story takes place in AC 190, making him and Midii about 10 years old at the time they meet.  The reader discovers many things in Trowa's past, the most important being that circus performer Cathrine Bloom is his sister. The children were separated when their parents were killed in an explosion that destroyed their circus wagon.  Trowa, then known as Nanashi or No Name, was picked up by mercenaries and trained as a soldier from a very young age.  During this time he met Midii, a young girl who appeared to be a homeless orphan like himself but was in fact a spy for the Alliance who communicated the mercenaries location via a game necklace she always wore. 

Midii never appears in the anime series on television but in the OVA Endless Waltz Trowa is shown wearing the cross necklace she gave him.

Some fans believe Midii is the character Lady Une.  However age and appearance make this idea very unlikely, although it is not officially ruled out.  The opinion of the webmistress is that they are separate characters, perhaps related as cousins or as aunt and niece.

Why the Trowa x Midii pairing?

There wasn't much interest in the obscure character of Midii Une evident on the internet before the arrival of the Gundam Wing television series in the United States in April 2000.  At that time the fandom increased monumentally and several fanfiction authors picked up on the character of Midii from the translation of Trowa's Episode Zero at The Gundam Wing Archive .

Like all of the pairings fans create for Gundam Wing, Trowa and Midii are not officially a couple.  In fact Trowa and Midii is one of the rarest pairings.  This site was created to change that and with some success!  The S*S explores the possibilities of these two meeting again and continues their star-crossed love story.  The following are my personal reasons for hosting this shrine and writing fanfiction centering around these two characters.

After I read the manga I was immediately struck by the sadness of Midii and Trowa's story. In my heart I wanted to see a future where they ended up together.  Their profound effect on each other is a jumping off point, but even though they were children I saw a poignant tragic romance in their situation that sparked my imagination. I think 3xMU has a lot of potential, a very romantic storyline with the elements of first love, sacrifice and betrayal.

Personally I like pairing this volatile, emotional young woman with the stoic Trowa. I like making him crack under the emotions she sparks in him. I like seeing them overcome every obstacle and end up together in the end. I also like seeing them try to end up together and fail. But no matter what, I like seeing them have an impact on each other's lives.

Twice Trowa could have killed Midii, a lot of people say "so what"?! But this went totally against his nature as a soldier, especially the second time. I like pairing him with a character that gets his character so off-kilter. I like portraying his emotional struggle. As for Midii, I love her because she portrays someone suffering from the war, forced to sacrifice her own feelings and integrity to feed her family. She shows Trowa how important it is to do anything for the ones you love and want to protect. Trowa finds this out in spades when he meets Cathrine, he must realize at this point, deep in his heart that what Midii did was totally justified at least from her family's point of view. Trowa has always been lonely and nameless, Midii is someone who saw him and instantly cared, she was torn about how to proceed with her mission because of him.

And of course the obvious. She loves him, despite her youth, despite the situation and his apparent coldness, we see this stated clearly in her thoughts. The argument about her age or her intentions doesn't really cut any ice with me because that is my interpretation, it's what I work from, believe in and what I see when I read my Episode Zero. Everyone sees it differently, my vision of it is why I write and support the couple I do. Even if we don't see this kind of thing happening in real life it's the story we're being given. It's like Romeo and Juliet to me, classic first love, separation and in my fiction universe a chance to meet again and see if it plays out differently. I enjoy other Trowa and Midii pairings but having them together is my preferred situation.  I think Trowa will always be in there somewhere, friend or enemy, because he is her connection to the GW universe and because of what they were to one another long ago.

Of course there are also arguments against the couple, these include their young age when they met, the fact that Midii did indeed betray Nanashi's trust and there are possible relationships Trowa might form with the other Gundam pilots, especially Quatre.  The Spy and The Silencer was not created to belittle these other possibilities but to provide a forum to explore the dynamics of a Trowa/Midii reunion and the inevitable situations that would arise from it.  It is the webmistress' hope that any Gundam fan could come to this site for information or just to see what we're all about and feel welcome.

A final note of clarification!

When I first started writing Trowa and Midii I thought it would be a great idea to take Midii Une as my pen name because she was my favorite character and to get people interested in who she was.  This has caused some confusion that Midii Une is a fan-created character.  I hope the section about who Midii is clarifies this.  I'm just a writer who sits about in my flannel jammie pants and oversized HeavyArms shirt, surrounded by GW posters and my coveted little 4-inch action figures, whose goal in life is to bring you regular The Spy and The Silencer updates.  Some real life changes have forced me to cut back my own writing but I hope to write more in the future and will continue to update The Spy and The Silencer.  You can read other works by me that are non-3xMU at my personal site Gundam Noir.  Please feel free to contact me with any questions about this website or even send me art or fiction submissions of your own!  Please read the guidelines before requesting hosting privileges.

Authors create many stories for Trowa and Midii but only the Episode Zero story is official! In reality we don't even know the true color of Midii's hair or eyes, her nationality or other personal preferences.
