Trowa raced past Midii’s hiding place, the tree’s whizzing by the silver motorcycle as he continued on his headlong course. He had to find her, speak with her. He couldn’t believe that after all these years she was still alive. He remembered the last time he saw her, when he was ten years old and a member of the mercenary company. She had betrayed them, caused the deaths of his only family. He had heard rumors about the Ice Queen of the Espionage game, a blonde bombshell, with lifeless eyes and a gaze that could kill. She couldn’t possibly be Midii, his mind supplied as the chase continued.
Midii breathed a sigh of relief as he barreled past her hiding place, the numbness was beginning to wear off and her wounds were making themselves known. She bit down on her lip as every slight movement caused a raging inferno of pain to wash through her body. Her head began to swim from the loss of blood as she began to make her way to the ornate oak doors, which would give her sanctuary. She had to smile at the thought of trusting anyone for an amount of time; an unspoken code afforded her that luxury. No spy would gun another down while they were hidden in the arms of a haven, certain doom would meet those who did.
“Shit, Midii, what the fuck did you do?” Came the alarmed voice of Alonzo, a young Italian man, he was the closest thing she had to a best friend. His almond eyes widened in surprise when he saw the state of her attire.
“I decided to take a swan dive through a window,” she replied through gritted teeth, her blood making soft splashing sounds as it marred the once pristine marble floor.
“Shit Midii, be more careful next time, you’re not Superwoman you know, you do have weaknesses.”
“I know that,” she said through chattering teeth, “I’m not stupid.” Midii said before the world began to spin and fade to black.
Alonzo managed to grab onto her frail form before her head hit the floor, his eyes widening when her blood covered his hands. No one had ever seen the queen of the game in such a state; it was unheard of.
She looked so peaceful lying there on the crimson sheets, her short golden hair slightly fanned on the pillow. He maneuvered closer to the bed a tray of medical equipment in his hands. The bandaging needed changing, her blood was already beginning to seep through the layers of gauze. He had known her for ten years, they had been friends and lovers, but now they were just acquaintances in the trade. Time changed everything, her cold heart preventing her from being alive, just allowing her to live. His fingers worked deftly as the bindings fell from her waist, the gashes neatly stitched but still oozing blood. Nikita would be with them in the morning, until then he would have to keep her alive.
Midii was in a dark place, there was no sound, no warmth, it was a prison of ice. In the middle of the darkness stood a little girl, frozen in ice, the tears were frozen in place traveling down her pale cheeks. The child’s hands were frozen in position over heart, as if she was desperately trying to hold onto what was left. The expression of utter anguish on her face spoke to Midii, the little girl was herself, the person she had been before he left her. This little girl’s heart lay around the prison of ice, shattered into a million pieces. Her shattered heart was just waiting for someone to piece it back together, to make it whole, piece by piece.
“This is what he did to you,” her mind uttered, the venom dripping off each word. “He left you there to die, he never cared for you. Because of him, you’ve imprisoned your true self in this statue of ice, your life is cold, and your heart is cold. You’ll never be alive.”
She blinked as she watched the statue of ice, the voice in her mind spoke the truth, but could it ever change. A light began to glow behind her, the light beginning to alleviate the darkness, but his form was blocking it. His face usually so emotionless spoke volumes to her; don’t leave me, it cried to her cold and icy heart. He didn’t want her to leave him, but he had left her, why should she listen to him. The place was beginning to fade, the little girl imprisoned in ice staying clear a little longer than the rest. She didn’t see the cracks, which had begun to form at the base of the statue.
“Midii, don’t try to move,” Alonzo said, a hand resting on her frail shoulder. He smiled softly at her through his wild bangs, a rakish smile providing her with enjoyable memories from times passed. She didn’t try to move, her body hurt all over, she hurt from the tips of her toes to the roots of her hair. Alonzo just smiled again, his hands producing a glass of Evian and two little white pills, before she could move to take them he was beside her. His weight causing the bed to dip, throwing Midii off balance once more. He fed her the pills like a small helpless child, one calloused hand supporting her head as the other offered the pills, gently demanding she open her mouth.
He gently pushed her back into the crimson sheets before moving over to the window, she rolled her eyes as he began the lecture. “You’re not some stupid child just off the assembly line, Midii. What the hell happened out there? You’re the Queen of the Game, the Ice Queen to be more exact. You’re not meant to make stupid mistakes, have you let all the success rot your brain…” He began to rant as she studied his form; he was the same man she had known all those years ago. He still had the body of a swimmer, his arms and legs well defined. His long midnight hair was loose though, a change from the man she had known. He had always worn it in some sort of tail, but the slant of his cheek and the almond eyes, they were the same, the man that had wormed his way through a crack in the ice surrounding her heart.
“Alonzo,” she interrupted her voice raspy. “I am not one of these little fans of yours who hang on every single word you say. I made a mistake; I didn’t expect the Gundam pilots to be there, I should have all right. I’m not perfect, I wish everyone would stop placing me on some pedestal or in their personal hall of fame; I’m a spy, a good one at that. But I am not some fucking James Bond, I make mistakes and there is hardly anyone ever there to see them, now if you tell anyone about this fiasco, you will find yourself missing a few vital organs.” She said the last line with a hand motion, the familiar snip-snip gesture.
“This room is meant to be quiet,” came the soft voice of the woman who had treated Midii’s wounds. The light from the landing illuminating the slight form, Nikita was someone every one knew her gentle words and devious plots making her irreplaceable in the world of espionage. She was the one person everyone trusted without a doubt, no one knew the little secret she carried with her, or the formidable allies, which backed her.
“I was just trying to knock some sense into that blonde head of hers,” Alonzo said as he ducked out of the room, a glowering Midii glaring after his retreating form.
“One of these days, I’ll make good on my threat,” she said through gritted teeth. Her hands began to form into fists before a cry of pain escaped her lips.
“Be careful there Ice, you did a number on yourself, Alonzo was out wearing a path in the carpet worrying over you. What did you do to yourself? Never mind I don’t think I want to know,” she said holding up a hand to quell Midii’s explanation. Her blue eyes sparkled with tears almost at the thought of betraying the young woman who lay so helpless before her. Her mission, to tear the secret organization of spy’s into the spotlight, to shed light on the leaders, the ringmasters. They had never known that this slip of a woman was the most feared of them all, the ruthless Ice Queen to whom everyone bowed down to.
“I never asked for him to care,” she said gingerly rubbing her temples, before a look of apprehension crossed her face. “Where’s all my stuff Nikita,” she asked her voice worried. Nikita patted her pocket’s searching for the disc she had been unable to crack; the Preventers would not be able to find the information Midii had stolen.
“Here you go, I take it this is what you were looking for,” Nikita holding the disc up between her fingers. She smiled softly as Midii reached for only to whimper slightly in pain. The look in the young woman’s eyes promised pain if her property was not returned, Nikita shivered slightly as she tossed the disc within Midii’s reach. “Get some rest, you banged yourself up pretty badly,” she said before her blonde hair winked out the door.
Nikita leaned heavily against the closed oak doors, the charade was getting harder and harder to keep up. She moved towards her rooms when the COM unit in her pocket began to vibrate, only one group of people knew the number, the call was important. She clicked it on, once the safety of her rooms had been reached.
“Sally, we have a problem,” came the monotone voice of Heero Yuy.
