Sally walked down the hall, tears in her eyes as she prepared herself to speak to those waiting for her prognosis. She was so tired, the operation had been so difficult, and the results had not been what she had been hoping for. She was scared of their reactions, scared of having failed them. She wished that Wufei was with her, his presence was always a comfort to her, he was a constant pillar of support. She gathered her wits about her as she walked through the archway and faced those tearful eyes of the Une family and her friend Trowa Barton.
“How is she,” the youngest Une, Christof asked her, his eyes pleading for a miracle. “How is Damien?”
“I won’t lie the operation was long and hard,” Sally began as she ran a hand through her blonde hair. “At the moment it’s touch and go, I can’t guarantee anything with Damien. We removed the bullet, but the possibility of him ever walking again is questionable, there’s nothing more we can do.” The professional air of a doctor surrounding her as she detached herself from the situation.
“And Midii?”
“She’s in ICU, the fever has subsided but the infection is clinging to her, we’re doing our best. At best she’s disoriented but the chances for a full recovery are hopeful. I’m sorry I’m not the bearer of better news,” Sally whispered as she stood there.
“You’ve done the best you can, there’s nothing more we could have asked for,” an old man said from the corner as his blue-gray eyes bore into hers.
“Sir who are you,” she asked perplexed.
“Andre Une, two of your patients are my children,” he said softly with a sad smile. “It’s nice to see you well, Lady, I always knew you’d do well in life. Lady thank you for finding this old codger and knocking some sense into my thick skull. Une’s of a feather stick together, do we not? And Christof, come here boy and give your old man a hug,” Andre said holding out his arms as he regarded his youngest child.
“How do we know that you’re speaking the truth,” Trowa asked his voice wary as he struggled to accept this latest piece of news.
“I have their birth certificates, I can tell you how Midii was taken from my arms when she was ten years old, my sister Lady Une can vouch for me… She found me, so I could see my children,” he said softly. “But I think you would rather be by my daughter’s side than out here interrogating me. I promise not to leave before you’ve thoroughly questioned me.”
“Can I trust your word?”
“Trowa he speaks the truth,” Lady Une said softly, “he’s the only person who would insist on calling me my real name, he’s the only person I know who realizes that Lady is my real name. He is my brother, everything has been cleared, I swallowed my pride and looked him up, children should never be without their parents in times of trial. Got to her for now Trowa, this can wait for another time, another place.”
Trowa only looked at her before stalking from the room, heading towards the ICU, his heart in his throat as he waited to see his love. He remembered carrying her out of the compound, her body cold and limp, in his arms. He had been praying so hard that she’d live, she was the only reason he was alive, she was as vital to him as the air he breathed. At least her prognosis was better than Damien’s, at least it was hopeful.
“Am I alive,” Midii asked the darkness.
“You could say that in a way, you are in limbo, between life and death. You have dodged the mighty reaper’s scythe, so many times we have forgotten the original sin you committed to warrant such a fate. For years we have watched you, can you show us that you have a reason for living,” a child so like herself asked.
“I must be dreaming,” Midii said softly, her blue-gray eyes wide.
“No you are not dreaming. Answer the question,” the young girl asked softly.
“I have found love, the man of my dreams, and my destiny.”
“That is all we wanted to know,” the young girl said softly before vanishing and the world around Midii faded from sight.
“Midii I love you, don’t leave me,” came Trowa’s voice as he held her hand to his cheek, tears in his green eyes. “I’m lost without you.”
“Tro…wa,” she croaked, as she struggled to open her eyes. “I love you too.”
“You’re awake,” he said softly, pressing a kiss to her forehead. “I thought I’d lost you. Don’t ever do that again. You promised you would stay put.”
“I know, I’m so sorry I broke that promise, but there were things I needed to do. Damien left, he didn’t want me to die, he knew I would go in after all of you. I couldn’t lose him after I just found him, and then Wufei called me weak I couldn’t resist the urge to go. I am anything but weak, dishonorable maybe, but weak no,” Midii said softly, each word getting stronger than the last.
“Don’t ever do that again, please Midii promise me,” Trowa asked softly, holding her hands in his.
“Trowa, I can’t promise you that, I don’t want to break another promise to you,” Midii said as she tried to raise herself from the bed.
“Take me with you next time then, tell me at least,” Trowa pleaded recognizing that Midii was right, there may come a time in the future when she would need to put herself in danger, like she had done before.
“I’ll try… Trowa I’ll try.” She whispered tears in her eyes as her heart burst with love. “How is my brother,” she asked softly.
“He’s in a coma, Midii, you shouldn’t be worrying about things like that, just worry about getting better,” Trowa said softly trying to avoid the question.
“Trowa, what is it you’re not telling me,” Midii asked softly.
“That I’ve found you, bright eyes,” a soft voice came from the door.
“Papa,” she whispered, tears falling down her porcelain cheeks.
“Yes baby, it’s Papa, I won’t ever leave you again, I’m so sorry my daughter,” Andre said stepping into the light, ignoring Trowa’s growl.
“Be nice,” she said chucking her tall Spanish love in the ribs before smiling at her long lost father.
“Still the same bright eyes I remember aren’t you,” Andre said pulling her into a loose embrace.
“Papa, how is Damien?”
“I thought I could distract you from that,” Andre said brushing her hair out of her eyes, a sad smile on his face. “Your brother is in a coma, the bullet has been removed but he may never walk again,” he said pulling her to him once more.
Midii just cried into her father’s chest, her body shaking with the force of her sobs. Trowa could only watch on as Midii sought comfort from her father’s long absent embrace. He quietly left the room with tears in his eyes, now was the time for family, he wasn’t family, not yet at least. Her shattered hearts was slowly being pieced together now, and he would wait an eternity to have with him, they belonged together.
