Prove It by Captain Anonymous Trowa walked into the dark room, as Midii sat in front of the dark monitor screen. Only the green light from the numbers input on the screen broke the darkness. Trowa stood behind his young wife, looking down at her trembling fingers. “Is there anything else I can do for you tonight?” Midii stared at the screen , “There’s nothing else.” Trowa could tell how tense she was, “I’m going to go take care of Marie and give her a bottle. I’ll be in the next room if you need me Midii.” Midii looked away from the screen and looked at Trowa in the pale green light. “Thank you. Its important that I do this.” Trowa touched her shoulders, lightly massaging his hands along them. “I understand what your doing, and I know how difficult it is to confront the past.” Midii took a deep breathe. Trowa moved his hands away from her body, and walked towards the door. “Midii, I’ll be here if you need me.” “Thank you.” Midii listened as the door closed behind Trowa, and the room fell silent. She moved her finger towards the send key, and tapped it lightly. The message changed on the screen, as the connection went through. It seemed almost like an eternity. Midii could feel her heart racing inside of her, and the tension building inside of her. Lady looked at the monitor, as the incoming message icon flashed on the screen. She sat down at the desk, placing the glass of red wine she had been drinking beside the monitor. She accepted the message and waited as the connection went through. The screen changed, Midii could the image of the woman as the connection was established. She could woman say her name, almost in disbelief. “Midii.........” For a moment she was frozen, as she looked at Lady. Lady tried to hold back the emotions inside of her. There was so much she wanted to say to her cousin, so much she wanted to ask. Midii regained her composure, and said, “I thought that we should talk.........It’s been a long time. A lot of things have changed.” Lady looked at her cousin, not really sure what to say. If there was anything she could say. “I’ve tried so hard to understand why it all happened that way, I’ve tried to understand how you felt about him, and about us.” Lady looked into Midii’s blue eyes, “I never wanted to see you get hurt. I fell in love with him, I knew somehow I somehow I had to be with him. I was torn between myself.” She looked away from Midii, trying to escape her eyes, “I know that there is no way for me to change what happened, nor is there anyway to ease the pain I caused you. I just wanted you to know, that I am sorry for all the pain I’ve caused for you, and the family.” A tear rolled down her cheek. Midii paused for a moment, she wasn’t sure just how to feel. “After you left, I became a spy for the Alliance Military, selling out the lives of soldiers just so I could feed my own family. I betrayed so many people, and left so many of them dead. I was...........I was forced to betray him, the one that I love. I never got to be with him. For years I was alone.” Almost without thinking, Lady mouthed, “Lt. Barton.” “When I met him, he had no name and no past. I wanted to be like him, with no concerns, no worries, no pain. I fell in love with him, I wanted to be with him. But my mission, I couldn’t.........” Midii stopped, unable to go on. Midii looked at Lady, this was her cousin, this was finally it. She was with Trowa now, and started her life over again. After all the pain she had caused to Trowa, he had forgiven her. There were other people, who gave her a second a chance. Many of them were dead. Was she to forgive Lady? Johnnie. Midii could never forget what happened to him. Johnnie had fallen under curse she did, leaving behind so many dead, just so he could take care of the family. She didn’t know if Johnnie would ever recover. Her brother, years ago, he had been light hearted and a caring person. They were so close. Now after the war, he didn’t even seem like the same person. He was still suffering over what he had done. Midii looked at her, still able to see some traces of who she had been before. Midii said, “I know I’ll never be able to forget what happened, and that things will be like they were before all this.” She paused, hoping and praying deep inside she was doing the right thing. She could feel herself trying to find the words, it seemed almost impossible for her speak. “I want to be able to forgive you, but there is still so much pain. I don’t know if I’ll ever be able to. For years, we were apart. In my heart, I still do remember you as the cousin I once loved.” Lady looked up finally, seeing two tears streak down her face. Midii lifted her hand to wipe the drops off her face. As she did, Lady could see the shimmer of the gold ring on her finger. The images flooded through her mind, she could remembering the way she looked that day. Lady moved her hand, knocking over the glass of wine, letting the crimson liquid flow off the edge of the desk. She stood from the chair, she stared down at the wooden desk. She tried to keep her composure, as she spoke. “Midii, I know.......I know that you’ve been able to start a new life with him, and started a new family. I’m sorry for all the pain that I’ve caused. So many people have suffered because of my actions. I really don’t want to cause you anymore pain now.” Midii closed her eyes, as she brushed the tears from her cheek. ---------------------------- It was nearly an hour before she heard the door open. She sat silently in the dark room, staring at the now dark monitor that sat in front of her. The familiar footsteps echoed through the room as grew closer towards her. A soft said her name. “Midii.” Trowa stood behind her silently. Midii stood from the desk and moved her arms around her husband. She could feel his warm hands move across her back, as she buried her face into his chest. Trowa held her in his arms, he looked into her blue eyes, not saying a word. He could feel her pain, he had walked the same path that she was on. There was no easy way through it. There were no real answers. “I talked to her, I was able to tell her.........I was able to forgive her what she had done.” The war was over, there no reason. The pain would always be there, and still haunt her at night. There was nothing that could change the past. Trowa had spared her life that night ten years ago, now after all these years they were together. They had been able to put the past to rest. After everything that happened between her and Lady, she found the strength to forgive her. Trowa moved his hand up her back and touch her long blonde hair. “But there was something else. I don’t know if I did the right thing. I still haven’t told my brother about Lady. I really don't know how he would react. I wish I could have told him, but with everything that has happened, I didn’t to see him get hurt anymore.” Trowa looked into her eyes, he could tell that she needed him now. “Its all right Midii. Together we can get through this.” “Thank you.” Midii whispered approvingly as she laid her head back on Trowa’s chest. She closed her eyes. -------------------- It was Sunday morning as the sun rose from the Eastern sky. Townsend had turned in his desk chair to face the window. He took a sip of from his coffee, the bitter tasting liquid had been left over from the night before, it was cold now. He had worked the entire night. The light from the sun broke through the clouds and filtered in through the window, onto the Preventer Colonel. Townsend placed the cup onto the desk with both hands, his hands were shakey, probably due to the lack of sleep. He wasn’t sure just how long he had been awake, maybe two days now. Tonight he was going to take off work, and get some rest. Townsend closed his eyes as he leaned back in his desk chair. He had spent so many nights awake, there were really nothing new to him. He could still remember those endless nights. He could almost smell the perfume, the smell of sweat drenched uniforms, the feeling of a warm hand, on those nights before he came back to the post. That time, those nights, they were all a time that had long since past. What he wouldn’t give to be there once again, to live through same feelings. Townsend looked back at his desk, where his polished pistol laid, still fitted into its worn leather holster. Maybe he belonged on the other side. He always thought that things might someday get better. Maybe someday he would leave the Agency, and start his life over again. Maybe he would be able to find someone, find something, something to hold on to. A perfect life. Townsend took one last look at the morning sun before turning back to the pile of papers on his desk. ---------------------- To be continued.
