At Midnight Tonight
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
10:56 PM
Her eyes snapped open and her breath was harsh as she took
in the dark
hospital room around her. There were no lights on except for
the light of the
moon which streamed in through the blinds on the window. She
immediatly
regretted opening her eyes as a trickle of sweat gently
crawled into her eye,
stinging it harshly.
She whimpered quietly, trying to move her bandaged arm to
wipe her eye but to
no avail as she awakened a new set of pains throughout her
arm and her back.
She winced as she set her arm down and felt a wound reopen
on her back and
felt the warm blood flow into the bandages. She groaned
quietly as she tried
to turn her head to look at a figure she knew was there,
right in the seat,
strands of wavy blonde hair illuminated by silver falling in
front of her
eyes.
"T-Trowa. . ."
It was a matter of seconds, it seemed, before he was by her
side. He slowly
knelt beside her and took her hand.
"Midii. . ."
"It hurts. . .the pain, it's unbearable, I can't take
it anymore. . ."
"It's okay." He whispered, running his hand over
her bandages. And strangely,
the pain eased when he did that.
"Everything will be over soon enough. . .I
promise." He whispered to her,
brushing her hair back behind her ears and watching with a
slight amusement
as they fell back in front of her eyes.
"I swear. . .letting a bomb go undetected in the building.
. .Preventer
Intelligence must be dragging thei-" She was cut short
as a sharp pain shot
through her arm and up her spine. She arched her back and
cried out faintly
as the spasm passed. Trowa gently stroked her hair.
"It's okay, Midii. . .I'm here."
She sighed, a bit comforted, feeling the warmth of his hand
in her cold one.
"Midii. . .try to get some sleep, okay?" He
whispered, brushing her bangs out
of her eyes and behind her ears.
"Alright." She managed to whisper. He paused.
"I love you. You know that?"
"I know, Trowa." She closed her eyes and fell into
a light doze, with him by
her side.
It was when Sally entered an hour later that she woke again.
She looked as
though she had been crying and Midii was confused.
"Your stats aren't that good. Every time we take vital
signs pulses get
further apart and breaths more shallow. Midii, we think that
you're going to
die before morning."
Midii's sharp intake of breath was more felt than heard as
she squeezed
Trowa's hand.
"Trowa-" She stopped when she saw the saddened and
lost look on Sally's face.
"Don't you remember, Midii?" She whispered.
The chain of bombs, each one going off in 2-second
intervals, getting closer
and closer to them. . .
"Trowa was right there next to you."
"We don't have any time to get out of here!"
"He threw himself over you. . ."
He pulled her arm roughly and she stumbled to her feet.
"Trowa! What're you-" She stopped as he pulled
her into his arms, tucking her
head against her chest. She could hear him counting and
as the bomb exploded
a few meters away from them he threw her down to the
ground, his body
covering hers. . .
"Trowa died, Midii."
That was when he let go of her hand and the lines on her
heart monitor went
flat.
Somewhere, in the city, the dying vibrations of a clock's
twelfth chime
echoed through the medical building.
