On The Edge by Captain Anonymous The small Angel laid in her crib, surrounded by the small army of stuffed toys. She moved her tiny hand along a stuff lion, and squeezed the soft material. Midii stood over her, watching her, listening to her soft laughing as she lay in bliss. Trowa walked into the room, and stood beside Midii, and looked down at Marie as she put the lions paw into her small mouth. Midii looked over at Trowa, “The lion that Cathy gave her is still her favorite.” Trowa smiled. He looked at Midii, and could the look in her eyes. “Your still worried, aren’t you.” Midii nodded, “Its been the only thing that I can think about.” Trowa understood, “Your brother.” Midii touched her daughter’s warm cheek with her hand, “I know I should have told him before I made that call, but I just couldn’t bring myself to do it.” “Do you think that Johnnie would understand your feelings?” Midii said, “I really don’t know. I don’t even know him anymore. The last time I saw him before the start of the war, I remember him being a very kind person, always seemed open. We never kept secrets from each other. I don’t know what happened, what could make him change so much. After what happened with Catherine, I don’t know how would react, knowing that Lady was still alive.” Midii turned away, tears formed in her eyes. Trowa moved his hand towards Midii’s face, wiping away the tear as it streaked down her cheek. “I’ll be there if you want when you tell him. I know how hard this is.” Midii nodded, “It would really mean a lot to me if you were there with me.” Midii lifted her hand. “I really never wanted to see him get hurt, but I can’t keep it a secret from him Trowa.” “I think that your doing the right thing. I’ll be there with you, no matter what happens.” “But is this really the right thing. I don’t know how he’ll react. I don’t want to see him or Lady get hurt. “ Trowa wanted to promise Midii that everything was going to be all right. He knew that there was no easy way. The only thing he could do was stay by her side, and help her through this. He loved Midii, he didn’t want to see her in pain. Trowa had wrestled with his own demons, and his own past. There was so much pain. He knew Midii was strong, but he didn’t want her to have to go through any more pain. Midii looked down at her daughter, “I think she’s ready for her nap.” Trowa nodded approvingly. Midii reached down and picked up the small Angel. The small Angel gripped her mothers long blonde hair. Midii sat down in the rocking chair, and gently rocked Marie. Trowa stood behind the chair, watching as Marie closed her eyes and settled down for her nap. -------------------- Mitchell sat up in bed as the sun rose in the morning sky. The light shimmered through the window, lighting the room. He moved his hand in front of his face to block the light, as his eyes readjusted. He laid his head back on the pillow. He looked at his young wife as she slept, he long hair spread out over the white pillows. Mitchell couldn’t bring himself to wake her. She looked so peaceful, so calm. The way the morning sun touched her soft features, almost like an angel. He loved her. There was nothing that he wouldn’t do for her. Mitchell closed his eyes, letting his mind wander, back to those dark days of the war. The tears formed in his eyes, the memories were so clear to him, he would never be able to forget. They would always be there to haunt him. He could remember that day, when his heavy Alliance uniform coat was soaked in tear drops. Sylvia’s tears. He stayed with her when the news of her grandfather’s death arrived, trying to comfort her. Mitchell could still remember the pain. Field Marshal Noventa. Less then a year prior, Mitchell had been assigned as an aide to Noventa’s staff. The sorrow and pain in her eyes, it still all seemed so clear. There was nothing that he could do, nothing that he could say. He knew that she still missed her grandfather. Sylvia’s parents had died, she had been raised by her grandparents. She spent almost every summer in Marseilles with her grandfather. Sylvia had spent the past years living in Sicily with her grandmother. He knew how happy she was here. This was the life she wanted. Sylvia opened her eyes and moved closer to her husband, “Joel.” Mitchell moved his arm around her slender body, as he lay beside her. Sylvia smiled, as she made herself comfortable, not in any hurry to get out of bed. “How did you sleep last night? Everything seemed pretty quiet.” Mitchell said softly, not wanting to break the mood. “I slept all right, Sylvia.” Sylvia closed her eyes as she took a deep breathe, letting herself sink into the blankets and pillows. “I’m glad to hear it.” She still worried about him. “We probably should get up soon.” Sylvia rolled herself over, laying her body onto her husband’s body. Mitchell could feel her long hair against his skin, as she rested her chin on his shoulder. “Not just yet.” ----------------------- It was still early in the evening. Townsend walked down the long hall, carrying his daily reports under his arm. The door of the office had been left open. Townsend stood in the doorway and tapped on the door’s frame. He looked into the large office, past the large windows to the desk placed at the center. A voice said, “Come in.” Townsend walked across the floor and stood in front of the desk and stood at attention. Lady Une stood from her desk, wiping tears from her face. “Yes Colonel?” Townsend placed the folders down on the oak desk in front of Lady, “I just came in with the daily reports.” Townsend watched Lady as she took the reports and placed them by the rubber stamp at the edge of the desk. “Thank you, Colonel.” Townsend could see the look in her eyes, the look on her face. Townsend spoke, “Is everything all right?” Lady wiped the tears from her cheek, trying not to show any emotion. “It’s nothing, Colonel.” Townsend stood silently, not knowing what to say. Lady stood up from the desk and walked to the window. “That will be all Colonel Townsend, your dismissed.” Townsend clicked his heels together. He walked silently to the door, taking one look over his shoulder. Lady didn’t move, she stared out over the darkness. There was nothing he could say. Townsend walked outside of the office, and turned the corner into the main hall. Lady waited until she could hear the sound of Townsend’s footsteps disappear. She looked out the dark window, looking at the stars. It had been three nights since that call. Three nights since she had talked to Midii. Since then, that was all she could think about, as the memories that had been locked inside of her came flooding back. Everything that had happened, all the pain she caused Midii and her family. Did she really deserve her forgiveness? God had protected Midii, she had somehow survived the war. She had started her life over, she had a husband and small child. Part of her felt beyond salvation. She looked towards the sky, towards the stars. Lady knew Trieze’s soul was out there, among the stars. She prayed in her heart that he would guide her, and let her do the right thing. ---------------- It was around seven when Ralph came home. He came in through the door and placed his heavy brief case down on the floor. He walked across the kitchen, holding his shoulder, trying to ease the dull pain. He leaned in the doorway, closing his eyes. There was a sound in the next room, as he heard Chris. He opened his heavy eye lids and looked at her as she stood in the pale light. She looked like a dream. “Sorry I’m late Chris, there was something that I had to pick up.” “Its all right Ralph, I was worried about you.” Ralph glanced down at his shoulder as he stood up right, trying to straighten himself out. “I didn’t mean to worry you.” Chris could see the pain in Ralph’s eyes, as he tried to hide the pain. “Why don’t you come si down, it looks like your shoulder is bothering you again..” Ralph nodding reluctantly, “All right.” He walked silently across the room, followed by Chris. This was going to be the night. This was going to be the night he was going to ask her. Ralph slipped off his trench coat, ignoring the pain in his shoulder, and laid it over the arm rest of the couch. He sat down on the couch beside Chris. She carefully unbuttoned his shirt, before moving the sleeve down his arm. She moved her warm hands along his shoulder gently trying to massage some of the pain away. Ralph looked at her, he spoke slowly, “There’s something I have to tell you.” “What is it?” “Chris........” reached into the pocket of his trench coat and pulling the object out, concealing it at his side. “We’ve been together for a long time now. You’ve always been here for me Chris, your the only one I care about in this world. Nothing else matters to me now.” Chris looked at Ralph, now moving her hands slower along his shoulder. “I’ve never wanted to be with anyone but you.” Ralph paused for a moment. “Chris, will you marry me?” He opened the ring’s case and moved it towards her. Chris sat silently, wide eyed as she looked at the ring. She waited for this moment for so long. She spoke softly, she didn’t think about the words as slipped from her lips. “Yes.” Ralph could see the small tears forming in her eyes. She was happy. To be continued.
